Herr Bros. Repair Gasoline Alley
First let me say that Mike Monahan and I did some hours researching this
business and found more about the family and the avid bowlers that were
sponsored by the business. I believe that Arthur and Theodore Herr were partners
in the business and at some point, in the late 1960’s or early 1970 the business moved
to a new location on old Highway 40 at Newcastle, just east of the tunnel.
This business was located directly across from gasoline alley store and fuel. I
remember when Luther Road, heading west, turned at the canal and followed the
canal to Gasoline Alley where it intersected Highway 49. The blockade pillars in the
foreground of the sketch are to block traffic from trying to turn off 49 between the canal
and Herr Bros. where the old Luther Road was located and still had
businesses in operation.
The Herr Bros. ads in the Auburn Journal listed their location as
Gasoline Alley. This sketch depicts the era inthe early 1960’s. I hope
that the Facebook Auburn/Placer County family will fill in and share
the history that is familiar to them about the Herr Brothers. They were
avid bowlers and participated in the local leagues for many years.
