Jugo Covich, a Placer Legend

Jugo Covich was a champion of the Placer Hillmen, and a huge supporter
of student athletes. Always had a smile for you and loved to recall stories!
Jug was a giant of a man in our community, a Legend. I can’t think of anyone who has
touched more lives than Jug Covich.”

He was a World War II veteran. Covich started teaching at Placer in 1950. He was the
school’s athletic director from 1963-68 and principal from 1971-88. He was the
Sac-Joaquin Section president from 1982-86 and was the Sierra Foothill }
League commissioner from 1997-2015.

Covich, in the early 1970s, hired coaches Tom Johnson and Bill Miller out
of Southern California to head }the football program. From 1972-82,
Placer went 93-15-1, including state No. 1 finishes in 1977 and ’80.

The only thing dearer to Jug than the Hillmen students and athletes was family,
including his wife of nearly 70 years, Barbara and his two children Lisa and Toby.
Jugo was part of the first class of Placer High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductees in 2015.
He was presented with his old stand-by chair two years later after its restoration. Jugo always sat in
this chair at the Earl Crabbe games! It is now part of the Placer memorabilia in the
Placer Athletic Hall of Fame in the Earl Crabbe Gym.

Jug Covich, was a great coach, athletic director, principal and proponent of the
idea of kids staying involved at Placer. We lost him in 2017 at 94 years

but he will always be a Hillmen!
HAIL! HAIL! HAIL!

James Geddes
