The Shanghai Restaurant and Bar
Liquor in the Front... Poker in the Rear....
Good eats on the Side!
The Shanghai was an iconic part of Old Town Auburn's history.
It was historical landmark full of memorabilia and countless stories
from it history of over a century. The Yue family ran the business in
the center of Old Town that stretches back to 1896,
lasted three generations, and the 100+ years spanned three centuries.
I am sure that many of you have your own stories to share about
the days you and your friends hoisted a few at the Shanghai!
The sketch has been in the works for quite some time.
Leann Ferreira asked if I had considered drawing the Shanghai
back in June and we have been trying to find an old photo of the
Shanghai ever since. Leann is part of the Yue family and asked
Herb Yue if he had a photo we could use. Herb came through a
couple weeks ago. Leann told me that her grandmother "Gee" Ruth Yue
would take Herb lunch every day in a wicker basket... Gee wa a natural
red head and Leann and I thought she should be included in this sketch!
I hope that Leann and Herb will share some of the stories about the
Shanghai that most of us have never heard! Like the robber
who sawed a hole through the floor in a robbery attempt!
